KIMBERLY VENARDOS & COMPANY is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new paintings by

LAURENCE McNAMARA - New Paintings from the RIVER SERIES features some twenty-five luminous landscapes in oil by this Philadelphia-based artist. Drawing upon the rich tradition of American and European landscape painting, McNAMARA’s serene, metaphoric environments take a distinctly contemporary perspective. Distilling the elements of earth, air and water to their most basic forms, he blends a minimalist abstract vocabulary with representational images of nature.
Moving away from the use of narrative and figuration in his previous work, McNAMARA’s ‘River’ paintings are essays on light, atmosphere and composition. Exploring these fundamental themes in simple elegant vignettes, he underscores their symbolic qualities. A gentle river meanders across an expansive panorama, cutting a swath in the earth. Layers of translucent color - pale gold, green umber and muted pink, shift subtly in tone. The silent fleeting spectacle of a sunset is captured. McNamara cultivates images of sublime stillness and invites the viewer into an intimate and contemplative experience that is unfettered and open to interpretation.
LAURENCE McNAMARA has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in California, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and France. He was awarded a grant in 2001 from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. McNamara studied at the School of Visual Arts and the National Academy of Design and is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
This is LAURENCE McNAMARA’s first solo exhibition in New York.
